 Blog Post 9: Incredibox

This blog post is about Incredibox,
a tool of my own interest from the list of TLC: L3 - Learning through Creation resources. Incredibox is a website and app that allows children to create their own music from lists of preset options and by making their own. Incredibox has the student pick the base song that is associated with cartoon beatboxers. From there, they can add all sorts of different musical features by dressing the characters in different accessories. Each accessory makes a different musical sound, and you can combine them to make your own tune which turns into a video. Then, you can share the music you made and view other people's and vote on your favorite songs. You can also do mini-games that are puzzles where you have to figure out the right accessory to make a certain song.
For ease of use, I think this app is pretty easy to figure out. I had to do a bit of experimenting to figure out how it worked, but I think with a bit of guidance, kids could figure it out very quickly. It was easy to just experiment with making different music, and it was a little bit harder to figure out how to play the mini-games. It is also very easy to share your own creations and look at other people's songs, which is a nice feature. I'd say this website takes a little bit of trial and error to figure out but is overall pretty easy to use.
For versatility, this website is moderately versatile. It gives you quite a few different options for making music, though not as many as I would ideally like. The lower number of features does make it easier for younger students, but I can see older students wanting more variety. I liked that you can view other people's creations for more inspiration. There is also a feature that allows you to make "playlists" of your creation, which adds to the versatility and sharability. To me, its different features and purpose is something that can't really be done outside of an application like this. In the PICRAT mode, I'd say it is CT because it allows for lots of creativity, and transforms something that can't be done without technology.
The overall likelihood of me using this in my future classroom is moderate to low. I do not think I would use it as part of my instruction, but it could be a fun tool to show my students when they have free time or want to experiment with music-making. I do not really know how I would work this into my instruction besides it being a fun activity for students to play with. If I were doing a lesson on music or music creation, I'd definitely refer students to this tool. Besides that, I can't see myself using it on a regular basis.

  2. Hi Emily!
I have never heard of this website before! It seems like a really fun website. I agree that I probably wouldn't use it in my classroom unless we had spare time that the students chose to do this! Great job!
